2. Classifying Universities: Institutional Brands from the Market's Perspective
While this white paper is targeted at post secondary institutions interested in establishing their position in the maketplace, we might want to give it some attention. The author emphasizes the importance of understanding how a school is perceived and recommends using this existing perception as an authentic starting point for refining and shaping a school's identity. This is a marketing approach to education, one we might feel uncomfortable with; however, it appears that universities in Canada have already embraced the notion of branding. If you are interested in understanding where education is going, take a quick look at Harnessing the Winds of Change, a powerpoint from Ken Steele presented at the ARUCC conference in Halifax in June of 2008. You have to fill in the blanks when viewing a Powerpoint, but this one certainly establishes a context for our research.
